3 Ways Exercise Makes Your Skin Look Better

3 Ways Exercise Makes Your Skin Look Better

You already know exercise is good for your body, but did you know it may also give you better skin? That’s right: Provided that you stay hydrated and, if you exercise outdoors, always wear your sunscreen, because a regular workout can work wonders on your complexion.

Here are three ways exercise makes skin more radiant and healthy-looking:

1. Exercise cleanses your skin from the inside out. A good, sweaty workout gets your heart pumping, which boosts circulation and blood flow. That, in turn, nourishes skin cells. Plus, the increased blood flow delivers reparative nutrients to your skin and increases collagen production. Improved circulation aids in the removal of cellular debris, free radicals, and toxins.

2. Exercise helps clear clogged pores. Sweat and heat open your pores, making it easier to expel debris like dirt and oil – kind of like getting your face steamed during a facial. Just be sure to remove your makeup before working out and wash your face immediately afterward to keep that pore-clogging gunk from sinking right back in.

3. Exercise helps you de-stress and sleep better. When you are tired and stressed, your face reflects it. That might mean waking up with dark undereye circles or puffiness, dull skin or acne breakouts. Regular exercise can lower your levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol. Studies show that regular exercise can also ease insomnia — so you may finally start waking up with the great skin you’ve always dreamed about.

With a consistent workout regimen and a consistent skincare Regimen, your skin will look better than ever. Best of all, with both skincare and exercise, it’s never too late to start!

What’s your favorite workout? How has it helped your skin?

4 Things You Should Know About Radiant Defense

4 Things You Should Know About Radiant Defense

True innovations begin with a need – and the inspiration to solve for it. Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields were motivated to create their latest innovation by a common request from women of all ages and skin tones who were beyond thrilled with their daily Regimen results, yet still liked to use post-Regimen products that instantly perfect skin for a more polished look.

The Doctors challenged the R+F team of scientists to create a dermatology-inspired skincare product that instantly perfects while protecting one’s natural glow with powerful, good-for-skin ingredients. The result? New Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

The last step in your skincare routine, this multitasking complexion protector and perfector is available in six luminous shades, which can be worn alone or blended together to create customized color. A tinted “Glow Guard” that helps protect the skin you’ve earned, Radiant Defense instantly blurs imperfections without clogging pores or causing breakouts.

Here are four things you should know about Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid, the first DERMACOSMETICS product from Rodan + Fields.

1. It pairs perfectly with every Regimen — for even better results. When used with the REDEFINE Regimen, Radiant Defense helps minimize the look of fine lines and pores for an even healthier-looking complexion. For REVERSE users, Radiant Defense will even out tone and diminish the appearance of dark marks for a uniform, radiant finish. As part of the UNBLEMISH Regimen, Radiant Defense will instantly conceal the look of existing acne and post-acne marks. Finally, SOOTHE users will see blotchy skin instantly transformed into an even-toned, balanced-looking complexion.

2. It’s powered by the RD3 complex. Formulated with R+F’s proprietary RD3 complex, Radiant Defense provides three types of defense: environmental defense, barrier defense and photo defense. It helps neutralize the harmful effects of environmental aggressors, repair skin’s natural moisture barrier to avoid dry, irritated skin and helps protect against early signs of aging caused by UVA and UVB rays and disperses infrared light, preventing harmful effects of exposure.

3. It’s best applied with the Radiant Defense Liquid Brush. With luxuriously soft fibers that glide across skin and a tapered design that allows for precise application along every facial contour, the Radiant Defense Liquid Brush was designed to ensure flawless application of Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid. For luminous skin, add a pea-sized amount of product to the back of your hand, lightly tap the brush into it, then apply to your face in an outward motion until you’ve achieved your desired level of coverage.

4. It’s earning rave reviews. In a user study, 97% of participants felt Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid helped improve their skin immediately, and 94% noticed their skin looked healthier immediately. In the same study, 91% of participants noticed an instant reduction in visible redness, 89% noticed a reduction in visible pores and 86% noticed an improvement in perfecting discoloration.*

How To Tell If You Have Dry Skin – And How To Deal With It

How To Tell If You Have Dry Skin – And How To Deal With It

At one time or another, everyone has probably experienced dry skin on their arms, legs or elsewhere on their body. Dry body skin doesn’t look or feel the same for everyone, so you might notice just one of these signs or several at once:
Dry skin on your body can feel:

Tight, Itchy

Dry skin on your body can look:

Red, Ashy, Scaly, Cracked, Flaky

Depending on how much sun damage your skin has endured over the years, dry skin also may look crepey — thin, loose and papery, with surface lines.

Who gets dry skin and why?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, some of the primary causes of dry skin are age and climate. People who submerge their hands and arms into water frequently as part of their job — such as doctors, nurses and hairstylists — are also prone to dry skin. So are people who swim in highly chlorinated pools.

Luckily, there is a product for dry body skin in its many manifestations:

NEW Rodan + Fields  Active Hydration Body Replenish. Whether your symptoms are caused by genetics, age, climate or occupation, one thing you have in common with other dry-skin sufferers is that you’re probably seeking relief from how your skin feels and visible improvement in the way your skin looks. That’s where Active Hydration Body Replenish comes in.

This rich-feeling body cream is both hydrating and moisturizing.

(What’s the difference between the two? Find out here.)  It’s powered by the patent-pending Rodan + Fields 3D3P Molecular Matrix, which draws in water from the atmosphere and holds it against your skin. After just one use, your skin will feel softer, smoother and more hydrated.

And the benefits get even better over time. Used daily, Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish leaves skin feeling more nourished. In a four-week U.S. clinical study, Active Hydration Body Replenish more than doubled skin’s hydration level in just four weeks. A full 100% of study participants saw improvement in the overall appearance of their skin, 97% saw improvement in skin radiance and 94% saw improvement in the look of crepey skin.

Active Hydration Body Replenish is designed to relieve a multitude of dry-skin signs and works for all ages and skin types. So whether your skin is dry and crepey, flaky and itchy, or red and cracked, give it a try. Your body will thank you.

Moisture vs. Hydration: Why Your Skin Needs Both

Moisture vs. Hydration: Why Your Skin Needs Both

To visibly transform dry skin into soft, smooth, radiant skin, you need two types of products in your arsenal: a hydrator and a moisturizer. While they sound similar, these products perform distinct tasks. Hydrators draw water from the atmosphere and deliver it to the skin for added radiance, while moisturizers replenish the skin for less dryness and flakiness.

“There’s a big difference in results,” notes Mary Radford, RN, Director of Product Education at Rodan + Fields.

Let’s start with hydration. All skin types, not just visibly dry skin, benefit from added hydration. (That’s right: Oily skin and acne-prone skin need hydration, too.) Hydrated skin feels softer and is better prepared to receive skincare products layered on top. In addition, “Hydrated skin acts and looks younger,” says Mary.

Moisturization helps skin maintain the natural lipid barrier on its surface that keeps water from escaping — or at least slows the process. “Moisturizers include ingredients to lock down hydration,” says Mary.

To look and feel its best, your skin needs both hydration and moisture. Fortunately, there are multitasking products that boost both at the same time, such as new Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish.

The new body cream from Rodan + Fields is a single product that works double-duty. It includes Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin, super-hydrators that draw water from the atmosphere. Our patent-pending 3D3P Molecular Matrix, a three-dimensional polymer grid, holds these water-attracting ingredients against the skin to deliver instant and continuous hydration.

Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish also contains the moisturizing ingredients Coconut Oil, Shea Butter and Vitamin E, which work together to strengthen the skin’s all-important natural barrier.

In combination, these hydrating and moisturizing ingredients visibly transform dull, dry skin. For radiant, soft and smooth-looking skin,  Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish is a win-win.

Forward this to a friend who’d like to discover the difference between hydration and moisturization.

The Skin Benefits of Vitamin A

The Skin Benefits of Vitamin A

THE SKIN BENEFITS OF VITAMIN A

You know the drill when it comes to caring for your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturize, apply sunscreen... With so many possibilities (and products) to help your skin looks its best there are a few nutrients that skin really needs—and vitamin A is one of them. Whether you get it from your diet or in a topical cream, the protective and nourishing properties of Vitamin A, and the nutrients your body uses to make it, lend a hand in keeping skin healthy, firm and radiant.

Here’s what happens when you feed your body vitamin A:

  • IT PROTECTS AGAINST UV DAMAGE AND SLOWS SIGNS OF AGING. Most of your vitamin A intake comes from eating foods rich in beta-carotene and provitamin A carotenoids, which are potent antioxidants.

IT ENCOURAGES HEALTHY SKIN CELL PRODUCTION. Retinal, retinol and retinoic acid are important to cell production and growth. Vitamin A also stimulates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for developing tissue that keeps skin firm and healthy—in the deep layers of your skin. Because vitamin A and carotenoids play such a big role in cell and tissue growth, not getting enough can lead to weakened skin, causing problems ranging from dryness to wounds that heal more slowly.

  • IT PROTECTS AGAINST INFECTION. Your skin is an important part of your immune system; think of it as your body’s bouncer—a first line of defense against bacteria, pollutants and infection. By promoting cell production, vitamin A helps strengthen this barrier, protecting your complexion from harmful irritants that attempt to attack the surface.

Here’s what happens when you apply vitamin A topically:

  • IT SMOOTHES WRINKLES. Topical vitamin A in the form of retinol (found in over-the-counter products) and retinoic acid (found in prescription creams) are proven wrinkle-fighters and many dermatologists’ go-to recommendation for combating signs of aging. Research has shown that these ingredients are able to stimulate collagen production: When collagen becomes damaged due to UV exposure and other aggressors, wrinkles begin to develop, much like cracks in a weak foundation. Retinoids “turn on” cells responsible for making new collagen, strengthening your skin and filling in fine lines below the surface so skin looks smoother. One study found that after using a prescription-strength vitamin A cream for 10 to 12 months participants noticed significantly fewer wrinkles, and medical experts noted an 80 percent increase in collagen.
  • IT EVENS SKIN TONE AND GIVES YOU A GLOW. Vitamin A creams can help lighten sun-induced brown spots and boost skin radiance in two ways: First, by increasing and normalizing skin cell turnover, which helps you shed pigmented, damaged and rough surface cells, making room for healthier cells and allowing light to bounce off more evenly. Secondly, retinoids may block an enzyme needed for melanin (pigment) production, further helping to deliver an even-toned, glowing complexion.

IT CLEARS UP ACNE. Pimples form when pores become clogged with dead skin cells, bacteria and oil, providing the perfect breeding ground for Propionibacterium acnes, a common bacteria responsible for blemishes. When vitamin A creams stimulate cell turnover the same process happens within the pores themselves, helping to slow oil production and keep pores clear.
