That Spring Fling Thing

That Spring Fling Thing

Everyone loves the spring, after all, winter is over. But there are all sorts of skin issues that can arise when grass starts to grow and flowers begin to bloom (attention allergy sufferers!). From sudden downpours to pollen clouds to the sun’s rays hitting skin that’s been covered up for months, spring carries the potential for turmoil.

Here are some common spring skin concerns and how to handle them:

1. Sun Protection

Reconnect with your skin that’s been hiding under layers of puffers for months. We know you’ve been using sun protection on your face since that is a must year-round (ahem!), but protecting your arms, neck, chest area and hands is key if you want to avoid visible signs of aging down the road. “Sunscreen is hands-down the one thing we overlook in the spring,” says Mary Radford, RN and Director of Product Content at Rodan + Fields. She says the light silhouettes of sunglasses, tank tops and shorts are painful reminders of the sun’s strength. To protect, ESSENTIALS Body Sunscreen SPF 30 gives 40 minutes of water-resistant protection all over. REDEFINE Hand Treatment Regimen includes Brightening Hand Treatment and Age Shield Hand Balm which contains Vitamin C to reduce the looks of dark spots and SPF 30 to help defend against sun’s rays.

2. Wake Up Tired Eyes

We’ve all heard of Spring Fever, Spring Fling(s) and Spring Break! There’s a certain enthusiasm that helps us break out of our winter cocoons. That can also lead to outdoor Happy Hours and late evenings, leaving us depleted. “Spring fever gets us all in a tizzy burning the candle at both ends to take advantage of our new fresh surroundings,” says Radford. “But being overzealous can lead to dehydration and dullness in the eye area and puffiness from allergies and overindulging.” So, she uses Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex twice a day to wake up her tired eyes and brighten the eye area.

3. Dry Skin on Elbows, Knees and other Tough Spots

Your skin has been secretly giving away its moisture to the dry winter weather. It’s not uncommon to find that your elbows, knees and other body parts feel (and look) drier the second you ditch the long sleeves and pants. Active Hydration Body Replenish contains our 3D3P Molecular Matrix to attract water from the atmosphere and lock it onto skin, hydrating and moisturizing instantly and over time. It’s a drink of water for thirsty, parched skin, which just so happens to be all over your body right now.

4. A Smooth and Even Skin Tone and Texture

We all need a little help smoothing out the appearance of our skin, especially after a season that is synonymous with “cold” and “windy” and “rainy”. “The last layer of my daily skin care routine is Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid to guard my skin against the environmental bloom-athon of spring, the sun’s UV rays and warmer weather’s potential for moisture loss,” says Radford. “But the best part is my skin tone looks even, the formulation does not settle into lines and it’s oil-free and won’t clog pores. I believe that I am doing something good for my skin with every application.”

Luckily, we have solutions to deal with this season’s hazards and can just rejoice in the fact that Spring really is right around the corner. Now get outside!

Ask Mary: Dry Skin Facts

Ask Mary: Dry Skin Facts

Rodan + Fields product expert-in-residence Mary Radford, RN, on the causes of dry skin — and how to cope.

Q: Help! Why is my skin so dry?
A: Lots of things can make skin look or feel dry, including genetics, certain illnesses and medications, aging and climate. We can’t control the weather or the date on our birth certificate, but we can replenish dry skin and help keep it from getting too dry in the first place.

Q. Why does my usually normal skin get so dry in the winter?
A. When it’s very cold outside, the humidity drops. This lack of moisture in the air leads to visible skin dryness. Turning up the heat, cozying up to a fire or taking a hot shower may make your dry skin worse: The heat may feel good, but it can also be dehydrating.

Q. What about the opposite – why does my skin get so dry in the summer?
A. In the warmer months, most people expose more skin to the elements. Heat and wind evaporate skin’s natural surface moisture. So do UV rays, especially if you get sunburned. Plus, chlorinated pools and saltwater are dehydrating — the list goes on and on!

Q. How do I treat dry skin?
A. I’ve got three words for you: Exfoliate. Hydrate. Moisturize.
I exfoliate my face and body with Rodan + Fields ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste two to four times a week. (If you’re new to exfoliation, more than once a week may be too irritating, so start slow.) The next step is to drench your skin from the outside in. For your face, try Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Serum. Apply your moisturizer on top of the serum.

For your body, the “hydrate and moisturize” steps are extra-easy: Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish does both! (Click here for more about the difference between hydration and moisturization.)

Q. What if my skin is so dry it hurts?
A. Once skin becomes cracked and flaky, it’s challenging to get it back on track. Tiny fissures in cracked skin make it even more vulnerable to irritation, so skip the exfoliation and pamper skin by hydrating and moisturizing for several days. Once your skin is in better shape, you can add gentle exfoliation. (Our Soothe Regimen for sensitive skin can work wonders on dry skin, too.)

Q. How can I prevent dry skin?
A. Skip drying soap and opt for a cleansing cream. Bundle up in the winter and wear sun-protective clothing in the summer. Wear sunscreen every day, 365 days a year. And drink more water, too!

Prepare Now For Holiday Party Skin

Prepare Now For Holiday Party Skin

The holiday social whirl is fast approaching. Is your skin ready for all of those party selfies? If the answer is no, not to worry. This is the perfect time to commit — or recommit — to your skincare routine. Start now and follow this advice, and you’ll see results in time to P-A-R-T-Y this holiday season.

P is for Protect and Perfect. Defend your complexion against the elements with our groundbreaking Glow Guard: NEW Rodan + Fields Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid offers protection against the effects of environmental aggressors, dryness and UV rays. Start using it now for lasting results over time — and instant perfection. Available in six flexible shades, this tinted multitasker immediately gives your skin a polished look, blurring imperfections and camouflaging redness.

A is for Add a few enhancements. These products add a few minutes to your routine, but the results are totally next-level. Try our AMP MD Derma-Roller with your REDEFINE or REVERSE Brightening Regimen; its micro-exfoliating tips help your skin absorb products more effectively. Treat your body to our ultra-hydrating moisturizer, Active Hydration Body Replenish, for visibly softer and smoother skin. Apply R+F Lash Boost nightly for the appearance of longer-looking lashes.

R is for Regimen dedication. The easiest way to ensure your skin is gorgeous for the holidays is to care for it all year. If you aren’t already using the Rodan + Fields Regimen that addresses your skin concerns, get started now! And don’t forget your lips and eye area. Use these products as directed and your skin will always be party-ready.

T is for Take care of yourself. Healthy eating, sleeping and hydration habits often go out the window during the holidays. Make a commitment to yourself now that you won’t let that happen this year! Nourish your skin from the inside out with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. Next, promise yourself that you will get enough sleep over the coming weeks. When you’re fatigued, your skin looks tired — which is exactly what you don’t want.

Y is for “You time.” The holidays are fun, but they can also be stressful, which doesn’t do your skin any favors. Before life gets crazy — and especially when it does — squeeze in a yoga class, read a book or get a massage. When you’re calm and happy, your skin will look the same.

Before you get the party started, here are even more ways to prepare your skin for the holidays.

Share this with friends or family members. It could save their skin — and their lives.

Negative People, Events and Circumstances ARE Our Best Assets…

With the best of intentions, we often fight against the flow when negative people and uncomfortable situations cross our path. The truth is, however,  that those people and circumstances are our biggest assets.

Think about it…it’s the negative stuff that, if we allow it, pushes us into a different direction and on to another course that is perhaps more prosperous and more abundant for us in the long run. If your life didn’t have any challenges, you wouldn’t have any reason to reflect and rediscover who you are truly meant to be!

Always remember, these kinds of assets are our personal change-agents!

So the next time life throws a bully at you, stop and take a moment to reflect on what the Universe is really trying to tell you!

To a more delightful you!

Wedding Day Skincare Countdown

wedding

The hair, the makeup, the dress…your skin? That’s right, whether you’re the bride-to-be, a bridesmaid or a VIP guest, you want your skin to be as smooth and flawless as the wedding. But how do you get your complexion to say “I do” for the big day too?

Achieving a radiant, wedding-worthy complexion can be a time investment, so start as early as you can. Introduce new skincare, from cleansers to makeup to sunless tanners, no less than a month before the date, so you can eliminate any products that trigger even the slightest irritation.

If you don’t have any complex skincare concerns, and you want smoother, softer, more even-looking skin—exfoliation is one of the safest, simplest ways to get your skin glowing. Even the best makeup won’t hide the look of uneven skin texture, so consider ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste, which uses sugar and salt to gently exfoliate. You can start using it up to one week before the wedding to remove old, built-up skin cells and allow younger, more vibrant cells to appear on the surface—and skin looks brighter after just one use.

Don’t exfoliate if you have a skin concern like adult acne. Instead, consider the UNBLEMISH Regimen, which targets blemishes and works to prevent future breakouts. If you’ve developed brown spots from sun exposure or hyperpigmentation, the  REVERSE Regimen helps to visually brighten and even skin tone. (You might even get away with wearing less makeup.) When it comes to skincare, the most impressive results are seen over time, so plan accordingly. If the event is less than a month away, our cardinal rule is to only stick with products that are currently compatible (or are extremely gentle) with your skin.

What should you avoid? In the last four weeks, don’t even consider in-office dermatological procedures (like chemical peels or laser treatments). Resist any last-minute temptations to try new products or treatments. Keep up your natural glow by staying hydrated and moisturizing skin. Last-minute facials (except gentle exfoliation) are off limits, as are touching, picking or squeezing, which can all irritate skin. Finally, avoid unnecessary stress and over-cleansing which can cause breakouts.

If it’s an outdoor wedding, wear a wide-brimmed hat (unless you’re the bride) and apply your sunscreen (try it in advance so you can find a formula that works with your makeup).

Ultimately, through thick and thin, your skin is with you for life—so be good to it always.
