The sizzling, sweaty days of summer…

Exercise is great and we are encouraged to get lots of it … however,  also be encouraged to immediately shed your sweaty clothes when you’re finished exercising.  Especially in the sizzling steamy summer months.   Staying in your hot, moist gym attire or golf shirt creates an environment where acne thrives and flourishes. We recommend cleansing immediately after exercising with a medicated body wash to help keep skin fresh and clear and smelling good!

Apply sunscreen to ALL exposed areas!

At the request of his wife, Michael started going to the dermatologist for yearly checkups. Michael is your typical “man’s man” … a hiker, biker and golfer who always steered clear of using skincare. He did turn over a new leaf when he married and started applying sunscreen to his face.

He’s been very healthy in the past few years, but this appointment he received some bad news … Michael had skin cancer on his left ear.

The sad truth is, this is not uncommon. In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men over the age of 50, and that risk continues to increase with every decade. And what’s more, they also found that men over the age of 40 have the highest annual exposure to UV rays.

Even men who are the most diligent with their sunscreen often forget their ears and their hairline. As hair recedes with time, most men forget to apply sunscreen on those newly exposed areas. And this can have huge implications, especially for golfers and outdoor enthusiasts, like it did with Michael. And the same applies for women. So cover up with a hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen to all exposed areas!

Do men really care…about their skin?

Do men really care whether their appearance is described as rugged and outdoorsy or worn,  tired and haggard? Yes, more and more men really do care.

Our fathers and men of  as little as a generation ago never ventured into the world of skincare beyond using a bar of soap. Today’s men are more than likely willing to sneak a dollop of eye cream or a scoop of micro-dermabrasion paste  from their wife or girlfriend’s treasure supply. But let’s face it, compared to women, men still have a long way to go before fully embracing the “metrosexual man” within.  And perhaps this is because there has been less pressure in the past for men to look youthful.  That notion however, is beginning to change, socially as well as medically.

Jane Fonda said it best: “Women are not forgiven for aging.  Bob Redford’s lines of distinction are my old age wrinkles.”

While the wrinkle on a man’s face might be “distinguished,” the cause can be dangerous… lethal in fact.  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are men over the age of 50, and that risk continues to increase with every decade. And, they also found that men over the age of 40 have the highest annual exposure to UV rays. Not surprising considering most men are not diligent daily sunscreen users.

Stay tuned, “metrosexual men”, to learn tips and advice for protecting the health of your skin.
