All About the Reverse Brightening Regimen

All About the Reverse Brightening Regimen

Reverse Regimen

As they say, it’s a privilege to get older. And there’s no question that certain aspects of the aging process are great, from improved confidence to having a better perspective on life. As for fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots … well, that’s the not-so-fun part of aging.

That’s where the Rodan + Fields Reverse Regimen comes in. Thanks to brightening (and acne-fighting) ingredients that can help reduce signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots, regular use of the Reverse Regimen can give your skin a younger look while fighting the skin’s natural aging process.

In fact, in our clinical trials, 73% of people who used this regimen noticed instantly brighter skin. After two weeks, 84% noticed softer, smother-feeling skin, and after four weeks 70% of people thought their skin looked more luminous. After eight weeks of use, study participants notice effects like less visible dark spots, clearer skin, more moisturized skin, healthier-looking skin, and more.*

In other words, there’s no question that the R+F Reverse Regimen achieves the desired effect of reversing and preventing signs of aging and brightening the skin overall. But how does it work, exactly? We break down how different ingredients in this four-step regimen can help address signs of aging. Here’s everything you need to know.

Cleansing with glycolic acid, lactic acid, and jojoba esters to brighten the skin

The first step of the R+F Reverse Regimen is the Reverse Deep Exfoliating Cleanser, which buffs and micro-refinishes the skin’s surface for a more radiant appearance. But how does it do this, exactly? The physical and chemical exfoliants included in this cleanser help to remove dulling, pigmented surface cells to reveal a brighter complexion and younger-looking skin.

The ingredients that make this happen include:

  • Glycolic acid, which softens the skin’s texture by gently exfoliating dead skin cells on the surface.
  • Lactic acid, which does the hard work of refining and smoothing out the skin
  • Jojoba esters polylactic acid, which physically lifts and clears skin impurities without the irritation that often comes with this step.

Niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, and licorice extract minimize discoloration

The second step of the R+F Reverse Regimen is the Reverse Intensive Brightening Toner, which softens the skin while minimizing discoloration for a bright, luminous complexion. In other words, you can get ready to say goodbye to dull skin, age spots, and other discoloration.

The ingredients that make this happen include:

  • Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is an essential nutrient that helps to even out skin tone and minimize skin congestion.
  • Sodium hyaluronate, which is a powerful humectant that helps to hydrate and soothe the skin
  • Licorice extract, which calms skin and visibly reduces discoloration caused by environmental triggers

SPF helps protect and the skin

The third step is SPF, a crucial part of protecting your skin from signs of aging since sun damage is one of the leading causes of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and other discoloration. That’s why the third step of the R+F Reverse Regimen is the Reverse Brightening Defense Fluid Lotion with SPF 50.

This is a lightweight lotion that protects the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. The high level of SPF (50), will provide longer, better sun protection than other sunscreens out there with lower SPFs.

Another ingredient is this Fluid Lotion that helps brighten the skin include:

  • Patented RF3 Antioxidant Complex, which helps defend the skin against environmental triggers that lead to discoloration.
  • Licorice extract, which calms skin and visibly reduces discoloration caused by environmental triggers.

Vitamin C, retinal technology, and kojic acid work hard to brighten the skin overnight

The final step of the R+F Reverse Regimen is the Reverse Tone Correcting Treatment, which works to reduce the look of dark spots and brown spots and visibly even out your skin tone.

This formula works so well thanks to the following ingredients:

  • 10% stabilized vitamin C blend, which helps to brighten the skin.
  • Retinal MD technology, which revitalizes the skin and helps enhance natural cell turnover, which helps reduce signs of aging
  • Kojic acid, which visibly diminishes discoloration and helps even skin tone.

Fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots happen to the best of us, and they’re a natural part of the aging process. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to address the signs of aging – the brightening, age-defying ingredients in the R+F Reverse Brightening Treatment are a great place to start!

Do You Have ‘Tech Neck’? Tips For Sagging Skin

Do You Have ‘Tech Neck’? Tips For Sagging Skin

If you’re like most of us, you’re spending more and more time each day — about four hours or more, according to a recent study — hunched over your smartphone, tablet or computer. You may also have the telltale signs of Tech Neck: pain, discomfort and poor posture. (You know the look: rounded back, shoulders caving inward, head pitched forward at an unnatural angle.) But you may not realize that your extensive screen time is also having a seriously aging effect on your neck.

Neck skin is thinner than the skin on your face, with fewer sebaceous glands and less collagen, so it’s naturally more prone to wrinkles and sagging. Though sun exposure is the primary cause of aging neck skin, repeatedly tilting your head down to stare at a screen can speed up the process by exacerbating the development of horizontal lines, says Rodan + Fields product-expert-in-residence Mary Radford, RN.

So what can you do about this extra-unfortunate side effect of tech use? Here are some tips:

PREVENTION

Put down your phone

Giving it up completely is unlikely, but try dialing it back a bit. Many devices now track your usage so you can tell exactly how much screen time you’re racking up and can adjust accordingly. Take frequent breaks from your screen(s), and exercise regularly. Gentle stretches for your back, neck and shoulders will help, too.

Pay attention to posture

Instead of gazing down at your phone or tablet, bring it up to your face. Invest in a stand that elevates your computer to a height that keeps your head above your shoulders and your chin parallel to the ground. You can also practice good posture at your desk by placing a tennis ball between your shoulder blades and sitting back into your chair. If the ball rolls down, you’re slumping, which suggests your head is dropping and your neck is wrinkling, too.

TREATMENT

Don’t neglect your neck

People tend to pamper their face but stop at the chin. Mary recommends using the Rodan + Fields REDEFINE Regimen to minimize the appearance of fine lines, visible pores and loss of firmness on your neck (as well as your face), and layering in Rodan + Fields  ENHANCEMENTS Active Hydration Serum for extra hydration. She’d combine that with the Rodan + Fields AMP MD Derma-Roller; its micro-exfoliating tips help enhance the penetration and effectiveness of your skincare Regimen and will leave the skin on your neck visibly firmer over time. “Start slowly,” she cautions. “One or two rolls, once or twice a week — since the neck area can be extra-sensitive.”

Slather on the SPF

You’ve heard it before: Sunscreen is a critical step in any skincare routine, and that goes for the skin on your neck, too. Mary recommends applying sunscreen every morning before leaving home and re-applying it every two hours if you’re outdoors, swimming or sweating.

That Spring Fling Thing

That Spring Fling Thing

Everyone loves the spring, after all, winter is over. But there are all sorts of skin issues that can arise when grass starts to grow and flowers begin to bloom (attention allergy sufferers!). From sudden downpours to pollen clouds to the sun’s rays hitting skin that’s been covered up for months, spring carries the potential for turmoil.

Here are some common spring skin concerns and how to handle them:

1. Sun Protection

Reconnect with your skin that’s been hiding under layers of puffers for months. We know you’ve been using sun protection on your face since that is a must year-round (ahem!), but protecting your arms, neck, chest area and hands is key if you want to avoid visible signs of aging down the road. “Sunscreen is hands-down the one thing we overlook in the spring,” says Mary Radford, RN and Director of Product Content at Rodan + Fields. She says the light silhouettes of sunglasses, tank tops and shorts are painful reminders of the sun’s strength. To protect, ESSENTIALS Body Sunscreen SPF 30 gives 40 minutes of water-resistant protection all over. REDEFINE Hand Treatment Regimen includes Brightening Hand Treatment and Age Shield Hand Balm which contains Vitamin C to reduce the looks of dark spots and SPF 30 to help defend against sun’s rays.

2. Wake Up Tired Eyes

We’ve all heard of Spring Fever, Spring Fling(s) and Spring Break! There’s a certain enthusiasm that helps us break out of our winter cocoons. That can also lead to outdoor Happy Hours and late evenings, leaving us depleted. “Spring fever gets us all in a tizzy burning the candle at both ends to take advantage of our new fresh surroundings,” says Radford. “But being overzealous can lead to dehydration and dullness in the eye area and puffiness from allergies and overindulging.” So, she uses Active Hydration Bright Eye Complex twice a day to wake up her tired eyes and brighten the eye area.

3. Dry Skin on Elbows, Knees and other Tough Spots

Your skin has been secretly giving away its moisture to the dry winter weather. It’s not uncommon to find that your elbows, knees and other body parts feel (and look) drier the second you ditch the long sleeves and pants. Active Hydration Body Replenish contains our 3D3P Molecular Matrix to attract water from the atmosphere and lock it onto skin, hydrating and moisturizing instantly and over time. It’s a drink of water for thirsty, parched skin, which just so happens to be all over your body right now.

4. A Smooth and Even Skin Tone and Texture

We all need a little help smoothing out the appearance of our skin, especially after a season that is synonymous with “cold” and “windy” and “rainy”. “The last layer of my daily skin care routine is Radiant Defense Perfecting Liquid to guard my skin against the environmental bloom-athon of spring, the sun’s UV rays and warmer weather’s potential for moisture loss,” says Radford. “But the best part is my skin tone looks even, the formulation does not settle into lines and it’s oil-free and won’t clog pores. I believe that I am doing something good for my skin with every application.”

Luckily, we have solutions to deal with this season’s hazards and can just rejoice in the fact that Spring really is right around the corner. Now get outside!

What Is Acne?

What Is Acne?

ALL ABOUT ACNE — AND HOW TO STOP IT

What is acne? Most people know acne as the annoying blemishes almost everyone has experienced at one time or another. What you may not know is that the pimple that appears on your face is actually the final step of a multiple-step process that Rodan + Fields founders Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields call the acne cycle. To break the cycle, it’s good to know what’s lurking beneath — and on top of — the surface.

It starts with your individual genetics and hormones, which control how much oil your skin produces. When oil production is excessive it mixes with dead skin cells to form a plug that clumps together in a pore. Trapped underneath this plug of debris, a type of bacteria found on skin called Propionibacterium acnes — P. acnes for short — begins to get busy. P. acnes thrives in environments that lack oxygen, like a clogged pore.

Happy inside its oxygen-free environment, the bacteria feeds on the oil and multiplies. Eventually, our skin reacts to the overgrowth of bacteria and its byproducts with inflammation or swelling, and voila: A pimple.

Many people think it’s the bacteria that is the main culprit, but without oil, oxygen would be able to get into the pore to kill the bacteria. And our hormones trigger the oil production. So all the steps are connected.

Since blemishes start forming days or even weeks before reaching the surface of the skin, the secret to controlling them is to keep them from forming in the first place. That means interrupting the acne cycle so the blemishes never get to the surface.

ACNE IS COMPLICATED, BUT TREATMENT ISN’T

Early in their dermatology careers, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields realized that though the acne cycle is complicated, the treatment didn’t have to be. Now, the Doctors have created two Rodan + Fields Regimens to break the acne cycle by unclogging pores, removing acne-causing bacteria and oil and preventing future breakouts. Both SPOTLESS, for teen and young adult acne, and UNBLEMISH, for adult acne and visible signs of aging, combine over-the-counter and cosmetic ingredients meant to be used twice a day over the entire face.

Both Regimens clear existing acne and prevent new blemishes from forming. The big news is the Doctors are bringing their effective acne solutions to even more people, perhaps you or someone you love.

Ask Mary: Dry Skin Facts

Ask Mary: Dry Skin Facts

Rodan + Fields product expert-in-residence Mary Radford, RN, on the causes of dry skin — and how to cope.

Q: Help! Why is my skin so dry?
A: Lots of things can make skin look or feel dry, including genetics, certain illnesses and medications, aging and climate. We can’t control the weather or the date on our birth certificate, but we can replenish dry skin and help keep it from getting too dry in the first place.

Q. Why does my usually normal skin get so dry in the winter?
A. When it’s very cold outside, the humidity drops. This lack of moisture in the air leads to visible skin dryness. Turning up the heat, cozying up to a fire or taking a hot shower may make your dry skin worse: The heat may feel good, but it can also be dehydrating.

Q. What about the opposite – why does my skin get so dry in the summer?
A. In the warmer months, most people expose more skin to the elements. Heat and wind evaporate skin’s natural surface moisture. So do UV rays, especially if you get sunburned. Plus, chlorinated pools and saltwater are dehydrating — the list goes on and on!

Q. How do I treat dry skin?
A. I’ve got three words for you: Exfoliate. Hydrate. Moisturize.
I exfoliate my face and body with Rodan + Fields ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste two to four times a week. (If you’re new to exfoliation, more than once a week may be too irritating, so start slow.) The next step is to drench your skin from the outside in. For your face, try Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Serum. Apply your moisturizer on top of the serum.

For your body, the “hydrate and moisturize” steps are extra-easy: Rodan + Fields Active Hydration Body Replenish does both! (Click here for more about the difference between hydration and moisturization.)

Q. What if my skin is so dry it hurts?
A. Once skin becomes cracked and flaky, it’s challenging to get it back on track. Tiny fissures in cracked skin make it even more vulnerable to irritation, so skip the exfoliation and pamper skin by hydrating and moisturizing for several days. Once your skin is in better shape, you can add gentle exfoliation. (Our Soothe Regimen for sensitive skin can work wonders on dry skin, too.)

Q. How can I prevent dry skin?
A. Skip drying soap and opt for a cleansing cream. Bundle up in the winter and wear sun-protective clothing in the summer. Wear sunscreen every day, 365 days a year. And drink more water, too!
